Scent MythBusters ๐ŸŽญ๏ธ

โ€œHigher concentration perfumes always have greater sillage.โ€
Myth of the week

TL;DR

It might seem intuitive that higher concentration means stronger sillage, but it isn't always the case. Sillage is influenced by ingredient volatility, molecular structure, composition and environment โ€” a lower-concentration fragrance can sometimes project more powerfully.

Factors beyond concentration

Volatility (top notes project, base notes stay close), molecular weight and diffusivity (lighter molecules travel farther), composition balance, diffusive materials (Iso E Super, Hedione, Ambroxan), application method, skin chemistry and environment. Examples: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (high concentration, moderate sillage) vs. Dior Sauvage EdT (lower concentration, strong projection via Ambroxan).

Sillage in urban environments

Molecule Spotlight: Davana ๐ŸŒผ

Davana (Artemisia pallens) is an aromatic herb native to southern India. Sweet, fruity and herbaceous with undertones of dried fruit, tea and balsam, it varies with the wearer's chemistry. Notable: Roberto Ugolini Azzurro, Naomi Goodsir Nuit de Bakรฉlite, Amouage Sunshine Woman, Histoires de Parfums 1740.
