Giovanni Sammarco
Perfumer. Founder of Sammarco. Italian born, based in Switzerland. Brand established 2013.
How he found perfumery
During the final year of his studies in civil law, Giovanni discovered perfumery and felt immediately drawn to it. While finishing his doctoral thesis he realised that composing fragrances could be a meaningful alternative to a legal career. The decision marked a turning point in his life.
Where it began
He taught himself the craft by studying textbooks, smelling raw materials, and learning through practice. His legal training remained useful for regulation and operations, but the daily work shifted to formulae, maceration, and evaluation. In 2013 he founded Sammarco as an independent house in Switzerland.
His first statement
Vitrum began as a request from a journalist named Federica who loved vetiver. Giovanni used an exceptional vetiver oil and softened it with rose, then added black pepper for structure and depth. The result is smoky and gentle, earthy and clear. Bond T was inspired by a visit to the factory of an Italian maître chocolatier in Pisa. Cocoa absolute meets patchouli and osmanthus to capture the warm atmosphere of chocolate with a dark, gourmand character.
The way he works
Creation unfolds in two phases. First he experiments with materials until the idea appears in the blend. Then he moves through the longer path of analyses, allergen checks, filtration, and bottling. A perfume feels finished when both the composition and the name fit. He values outstanding raw materials, seeks them widely, and mixes naturals with synthetics when they serve the idea.
His vision: Sammarco
The brand is built on quality, individuality, and small scale. Each release aims to be specific and personal rather than generic or trend led. Inspiration can be a single material, a person, a place, or a book. The goal is to make perfumes that speak to those who appreciate them and to keep exploring new territories.
In his own words
“It captivated me instantly.”
